Your Profession Is Your Business: Getting To Know The the Start-Up Industry

Whether you’re considering our Full-Stack Development, Data Science, Data Engineering or Cyber Security programs – you’re acquiring a profession, sharpening a skill, and developing your talent. However, in order to build a successful career path, it is essential that you get to know the industry. Here’s what we discussed in our recent webinar.

The concept of having both general knowledge of your field and expert knowledge of your skill is commonly referred to as a “T-Shaped” professional. It stresses the importance of understanding the general operations of your related industry. This concept is essential for experts in the tech world, and the start-up industry in particular, as this is an industry which changes frequently, and fast. It requires professionals to be agile, beyond just their profession. This is why understanding how this industry operates is essential for full-stack developers, data scientists, cyber security experts, and others who are experts in their fields.

For example, imagine you got accepted and graduated from our data engineering program, and you got a great job offer. Two years later, a friend calls and offers you to join their start-up company as a CTO. You’ve always heard of start-ups, and you’ve heard of terms such as “funding round”, “venture capital”, “accelerator”… But, do you really know what they mean? Though your focus may be on the technology itself, you are still heavily involved in the other processes. And thus, in order to succeed in your new role, you must have a strong understanding of the industry as a whole.

From the webinar: “How the Israeli start-up industry works and why should you care”

The importance of the T-approach in the hi-tech industry is also relevant in the interviewing stage of job applications. If you are able to show that you have a knowledge of the start-up industry, in addition to being highly skilled in your expertise, you may have an edge over the other candidates.

Such examples and case studies were exactly what many people asked about, during the active Q&A part of our recent webinar with Assaf Luxembourg. The webinar, which was held under the name “How the Israeli start-up industry works and why should you care” began with an explanation of the “T shape” approach, followed by a basic-yet-necessary introduction to the structure of the start-up industry and how it operates. Then, we “opened the microphone” for questions.

Here’s an example for one of the issues addressed in the webinar, about how knowing basic terms and the structure of the start-up industry is effective when preparing for your first job in tech.
